Bespoke timber sliding sash windows

Why settle for less when our handcrafted sliding sash windows combine the highest quality timber, traditional aesthetics, intricate frames and practical modern features for security, energy saving and practicality.

You won’t be surprised to know that, after helping specifiers and customers choose hardwood sliding sash windows for years, we’ve refined our bespoke windows to complement homes like yours. The appearance of our sliding sashes is matched by superior performance during the worst weather.

We currently offer two traditional sliding sash window variants. Each is available in standard double-glazed (with bonded glazing bars), or Slimlite glazed units.

NOTE: Slimlite glazing is designed to fit into single-glazed sections and profiles and shouldn’t be confused with actual single glazing.

Georgian ‘six over six’ sliding sash windows on ropes and weights

The windows operate on traditional ropes, weights and pulleys. The joinery sections include the following:

• Traditional staff and parting beads.
• Ovolo moulded sash profiles.
• Slender Georgian vertical glass bar sections for a traditional lambs tongue appearance.

Georgian ‘six over six’ sliding sash windows on spring balancers

In this version, the windows operate smoothly on double-sprung sash balancers. Weather seals and gaskets are discreetly grooved into the timber sections for a weatherproof seal. The joinery sections include the following:

• Traditional staff & parting beads.
• Ovolo moulded sash profile.
• Slender Georgian bar sections for an authentic lambs tongue appearance.

Here’s what to expect from your sliding sash windows:

• Traditional ropes and pulleys.
• Puttyline glazing.
• Traditional glazing bar sections.
• Conservation joinery sections and profiles.
• Traditional manufacture.
• Staff bead moulded outer box frame.
• Lambs tongue moulded sashes and glass bars (bonded in standard double-glazing).
We make puttyline sash windows in a similar way to our standard double-glazed windows. As for all our traditional sliding sash windows, sections, profiles and manufacturing methods comply with Part L of the building regulations.

For top performance in strictly controlled heritage applications, we supply sash windows with Slimlite glass units. Here are some of their main features:

• Individually glazed apertures and traditional joinery sections to accommodate Slimlite glass units in Grade II listed buildings. Slimlite glazing is designed to fit into single glazed sections and profiles – please don’t confuse it with actual single glazing.

• A choice of traditional sash windows with ropes, weights and pulleys, or smooth-operating sashes with double-sprung sash balancers.

• Multipoint locking for reassuring security.

• Naturally-durable kiln-dried timber, factory coated with Sikkens spray-applied Hi-build paint or stain coatings, or Accoya® windows ready for painted finishes.

• Precision engineered Schlegal weather seals and gaskets discreetly fitted into timber sections for weatherproof sealing.

• Joinery sections including traditional staff and parting beads and available with lambs tongue or ovolo moulded sash profiles.

• Single-glazed profiles have slender 16mm glass bar sections with puttyline profiles, lambs tongue or ovolo moulded profiles.

• A wide choice of elegant, slender glazing bars is available to suit all tastes.

• Our timber sash windows comply with the building regulations’ Means of Escape requirements (provided window size allows).

The art and craft behind your bespoke sash windows

Energy saving matters, so we specify windows with 20mm and 24mm St Gobain Planitherm, A-rated glazing. These are soft-coat double-glazed units with bonded glazing bars, argon gas-filled cavities and internal glazing to give an impressive 1.2 W/m2K U-Value.
The St Gobain units complement high-quality Pilkington K double glazing that’s also very effective at thermal retention to cut your heating bills and give excellent sound insulation.

For conservation fenestration, we recommend the tested combination of Siberian larch or Accoya® modified timber (instead of hardwood sash windows) and Sikkens moisture-vapour-permeable coatings. Accoya is a very impressive product – generally the most stable and naturally durable timber currently available.
When fitted with Slimline glazing units, our timber sash windows are generally targeted at conservation areas and Grade II listed-building extensions. Windows with Slimlite glass units can also be installed in Grade II listed buildings when approved by local authority conservation officers.
NOTE: Slimlite glazing is designed to fit into single-glazed sections and profiles and shouldn’t be confused with actual single glazing.

Traditional aesthetics and the latest joinery techniques

For over three decades we’ve designed, crafted and installed the highest quality bespoke timber sash window frames. As for all our timber windows and doors, these combine traditional craftsmanship with modern joinery techniques and superior timber to give window frames that are elegant and functional.
Once we’ve applied suitable breathable paints, or factory-stained your windows with an approved alkyd acrylic treatment, we won’t leave fitting to just anyone. We only entrust installation of your timber sliding sashes to our experienced in-house installation team.

Whether factory painted or stained, your timber sliding sash windows combine the traditional characteristics that architects and conservation officers love, plus the features and durability enabled by modern technology. To learn more
